As
we concern ourselves with the ways in which humanity is responsible for the
increasing march toward a climate that portends our own demise, I wonder about the
significance of our input. We see that we are accelerating the increase of CO2
in the atmosphere to the point of irreversibility. The idea that we might alter
this trajectory to “save ourselves” is a conceit that we have power large
enough to influence this change. The earth has been through eras and epics of geologic
change, growth and die outs of life forms. Change is certain. A visit to the
dunes reminds me of the magnitude of geologic time and the evanescence of
humanity.
We are each a grain of sand in time.
